English at Mill Dam is based around: high quality books, films, practical activities, speaking and listening, grammar, spelling and punctuation, and topic. This provides each child with a real reason for writing. Writing activities may by carried using traditional writing methods or electronically. We also enter a wide range of writing competitions. The learning environment has been developed to support the children in the application of knowledge and skills learning in core lessons.

Children are encouraged to read a wide range of books, using class libraries, school library and the books provided by Ackworth community library.

As a school we value the support parents give to their children when doing homework, reading with them and developing their speaking and listening skills.

Early reading and spelling skills are taught through daily phonics sessions in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, where the children are introduced to a new sound (phoneme) each day.

Children are taught to read letters or groups of letters by saying the sounds they represent and segmenting words into phonemes. Children start to read by blending the phonemes together to make words, extending the length of the words as they develop their skills and increase their confidence.

In school we follow the “Letters and Sounds “ programme, which is supported through the use of “Jolly Phonics” a multi-sensory method that includes actions, songs and letter formation.

In early reading and writing the children learn to apply their phonics skills by first seeing the phoneme, including it in a written word and then putting that word into a sentence.

Children also continue to apply their phonic skills throughout Key Stage 2, revisiting some of the more tricky phonemes and the different spellings for these.

We believe in a hands on approach to maths and believe the children should be 'doing' and 'exploring' as much as possible to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. In Key stages 1 and 2 two lessons a week are given over to investigations and the children have access to additional resources to assist them as needed.

When your child needs to practise a skill taught in a wave one lesson we will ask your child to complete home work. Spare copies of homework are usually available in the cloakrooms. If you would like individual support, please make an appointment with the subject leader, (English is lead by Mrs. Samuels, Maths is lead by Mr. West, KS1 by Mrs. Stevenson and EYFS by Miss Roberts).
